Building in existing fabric generates world-wide more than half of design commissions. This book gives an advanced student / young practitioners introduction to a creative segment : Adaptive Reuse -- the adaptation of existing structure to accommodate new functions, users and contexts. Comprised are the cultural, design, planning down to the construction phases of adaptive reuse, extending beyond architecture also into interior design. Building in existing fabric requires more than practical solutions and stylistic skills. The adaptive reuse of buildings, where changes in the structure go along with new programs and functions, poses the fundamental question of how the past should be included in the design for the future. Using vivid imagery from Frankenstein to Rem Koolhaas, the author provides a comprehensive introduction to architectural design for adaptive reuse projects.

Housing is scarce, that much has become evident in the last few years. As real estate prices in big cities continue to skyrocket, conventional ideas of housing development prove unable to meet demands. The reaction to these challenges has been a silent revolution in contemporary architecture - towards collective building and living. Using models, films, and walk-in displays, the exhibition 'Together! The New Architecture of the Collective' addresses this global phenomenon by presenting a broad array of collective building and living projects from Europe, Asia, and the United States. An overview of historical precedents for the current wave of collectives demonstrates that the idea of collectivity has been a recurring theme in the history of architecture, from the reformist ideas of the nineteenth century to the hippies and squatters of the twentieth who touted the slogan 'Make love, not lofts'

Shopping Towns Europe is the first book to explore the introduction and dissemination of the shopping centre in Europe.European shopping centres are often assumed to be no more than carbon copies of their American precursors – however the wide-ranging case studies featured in this book reveal a very different story. Drawing connections between architectural history, political economy and commerce, together these studies tell us much about the status and role of modernist design, the history of consumption, and the rapidly-changing social, urban, and national contexts of post-war Europe. The book's 18 chapters explore case studies spanning the continent on both sides of the Iron Curtain, from Britain and The Netherlands to Sweden and the USSR. The focus is on the three decades following the first introduction of the new typology in 1945, tracing the variety of typological manifestations that occurred in widely different contexts, from Keynesianism to communism to military dictatorship. The book also explores the role of the shopping centre in urban reconstruction, and examines how new shopping centres were designed to elicit specifically modern behaviour and introduce new conceptions of collectivity into citizens' everyday lives.

Widely disliked in their heyday and only recently beginning to be appreciated, brutalist buildings around the world are at risk of being lost—in many cases to demolition, and in some to insensitive reconstructions that would forever alter buildings’ appearance beyond recognition. SOS Brutalism is a distress signal, an attempt to galvanize public awareness of the architectural heritage that is at risk of being forever lost. The book, result of a major collaborative research undertaking by Deutsches Architektur Museum DAM and Wüstenrot Foundation, presents a global survey of brutalist architecture of the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s, covering around 120 key buildings from the period from around the world, many of them little-known and in imminent danger of destruction. Case studies of hotspots such as the Macedonian capital Skopje or New Haven, Connecticut, and essays on the history and theory of brutalism round out this groundbreaking and lavishly illustrated book.

This book explores the relation between modern design and the Belgian State. The ideology of modern design was closely linked to the utopian attempt of improving the everyday material world. Modernists had the universal belief that everyday spaces and objects affected their users in such a way that design practice could be a kind of political and social reform, or even a moral education. Modern design was however not only invested with these social aspirations, but knew also succes in political circles as an exponent for ideological positions, as a tool for political propaganda or as a marker of national identities. Also the Belgian state mobilized the universal idea of modern design to construct a positive national image for cultural, economic and diplomatic purposes. The famous Expo 58 with its iconic Atomium in Brussels are great examples of this engagement of the state with design to convey a sense of modernity. This book looks beyond the typical Belgian icons and shows how design was framed in economic and political debates in Belgium from the mid 19th century until the 1980s. Exhibition: ADAM Art & Design Atomium Museum, Brussels, Belgium (23.06.2017 - 01.09.2017).
